Shiny hunting is a tried and true tradition in the Pokémon series, and it makes a return in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Hunting for shiny Pokémon is not necessarily an easy or quick task as the odds are typically low. But each game changes these odds, and Reddit User Misterdakota1996 has generously compiled a list.

There are many different ways to catch a shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. You encounter them randomly at static locations, receive them as gifts, and hatch them. Each method has different odds, and you can see these shiny odds below.

Encounters

Random Pokémon encounters and static encounters can be shiny hunted. The starting odds are 1/4096, but players can improve these odds. Defeating or capturing the same Pokémon will increase your chances of encountering a shiny Pokémon. You can see these odds below.

  • 0-50 defeats/captures – 1/409650 defeats/captures – 1/2048100 defeats/captures – 1/1365200 defeats/captures – 1/1024500 defeats/captures – 1/683

Hatching Eggs

When it comes to hatching eggs for a shiny Pokémon, you will want to use Masuda Method. This requires you to have a Pokémon from another region. The best way to do this is to trade for a Ditto from another region as it can breed with nearly all Pokémon. The Masuda Method increases your shiny odds to 1/683.

PokéRadar

You can use the PokéRadar to chain Pokémon. This will increase your shiny odds. Should these odds remain faithful to the original games, they are as follows:

  • Chain of 10: 0.067% OddsChain of 20: 0.098% OddsChain of 30: 0.183% OddsChain of 35: 0.335% OddsChain of 40: 1.987% Odds

Grand Underground

In the Grand Underground, you may have noticed Diglets that disappear underground before you can reach them. They drop behind a purple residue that you can pick up. As you do, the number under your map will increase up to 40. At forty, this will increase your odds of finding a shiny to 1/99.

Some Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are shiny locked. This means players cannot catch them as a shiny regardless of how many times you restart your game. These include gifted Mythical Pokémon such as Mew and Jirachi.
