Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are the latest entry in the Pokémon series and look to expand on the gameplay and features fans are used to. Each new generation introduces new mechanics, including Tera Raid Battles. This may leave you wondering what Tera Raid Battles are and how they work in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Tera Raid Battles are a new feature in the Paldea Region and are special events in which strong Terastalized Pokémon must be defeated. You and three other trainers can work together to take down these powerful Pokémon. This may seem similar to Raid Battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield, but Tera Raid Battles have different mechanics.

How do Tera Raid Battles work in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

The most notable difference in Tera Raid Battles is that each trainer can act independently of one another. This means you can act seamlessly without waiting for the other trainers to decide their actions.

You can play with random trainers or your friends in Tera Raid Battles in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You will be able to join or host a battle, allowing you to find others whenever you are battling a Terastalized Pokémon. You must share a Link Code to invite your friends or join them.

The Jump into a Paldean Journey trailer explores Tera Raid Battles and how they work. This can be seen around the 11:40-minute mark. Here we see a trainer’s Sableye go down, but it soon recovers and rejoins the battle after some time. Additionally, trainers can cheer on their Pokémon to raise their stats and heal them.

The trailer also showed the Tera Raid Pokémon being captured, but this is still a little fuzzy. It is unclear if all trainers can capture the Pokémon or if only one trainer gets to take home the Tera Raid Pokémon. But we assume all players will get a chance to capture it, like in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
