The war for Azeroth was already raging long before Warcraft went massively multiplayer.

It’s been a very, very long time since the last WarCraft game. So long in fact that many might not be aware that before Warcraft was a massively multiplayer online game, it was a series of strategy games. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos was the last of these games to be released before World of Warcraft came and took everything over, and now, sixteen years later, Blizzard is bringing it back with Warcraft III: Reforged.

Warcraft III: Reforged is pretty much a top-to-bottom remaster of the original; so much so that it could almost be called a remake. It seems Blizzard has left no stone unturned in their efforts to modernize the classic RTS. The remade game features a complete visual overhaul, updated in-game cutscenes, re-recorded dialog, improved UI, a superior world editor, and full multiplayer support through Battle.net.

The new world editor is particularly noteworthy. In addition to the expected UI and visual overhaul, this new world editor features a full suite of new tools for users to enjoy. The game’s fans have been keeping it alive all these years through the content created in the original world editor, and now they’ll be able to do even more. They won’t even have to abandon the hard work they’ve already done either, it seems. All existing custom maps will be playable in Warcraft III: Reforged, and will even have the benefit of the game’s new matchmaking system to find partners and opponents for custom games. Come to think of it, perhaps this was why Warcraft III got an extensive update back in April.

Warcraft III: Reforged will be coming to PC in 2019 and will be available in two versions. The standard edition will be around $30, and the “Spoils of War” edition will be around $40. The difference between the two is a set of unique skins for hero units and bonuses for other Blizzard games such as the “Meat Wagon” mount for World of Warcraft and “The Third War” for Hearthstone. Pre-purchase is also available for those who are interested.
