The reward for completing all 8 tasks

Dmitry Osatyuk

Dmitry Osatyuk was the commander of a tank company on the Leningrad Front. On January 12, 1943, his light tank was cut off from his company by three heavy German tanks that it could do nothing against. Using himself as bait, Osatyuk led the enemy tanks under artillery fire and then defeated the enemy infantry in close combat, using machine guns, cannons, and the tracks of his tank. On January 18, his company was the first to meet the troops of the Volkhov Front, thus opening a land corridor to Leningrad and breaching its blockade. On January 21, Osatyuk’s tank was destroyed, but he pulled his wounded driver out of the tank, got him to safety, and kept fighting in another tank.

January 1st — January 4th

Operation Bolo

In 1966 North Vietnam received modern MiG-21 fighters from the USSR, which led to an increased number of American bombers getting shot down. To counter the threat, the US Air Force performed an operation on January 2, 1966: the F-4 fighters imitated the behavior of weaker strike aircraft F-105, leading Vietnamese MiGs into air combat, where they were quickly defeated. For the USA, it was one of the most successful air battles in the Vietnam war.

January 4th — January 7th

Operation Nasr

The largest tank battle of the Iran-Iraq war happened in its earliest months, on January 5-9,1981. Iran went into a counteroffensive, hoping to push the Iraqi invaders from its southeastern provinces, but Iraq learned of the enemy’s plans beforehand and prepared a trap. Iranian tank brigades were trapped in a three-sided box ambush with no supplies and, having suffered huge losses in four days, were forced to retreat.

January 8th — January 11

Battle of Luzon

The battle of Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines, began on January 9, 1945. During the initial weeklong landing, over 175 000 Allied troops landed on the island under constant attacks from enemy kamikaze pilots. In a month, Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was captured by the Allies, who suffered far less casualties than Japan.

January 12th — January 15th

Vistula–Oder offensive

At the request of the Allies who were holding off the German counteroffensive in Ardennes, the Soviet army began pushing the Wehrmacht from the east earlier than it had initially planned. On January 12, 1945, an offensive began leading to a devastating victory over the German forces. In less than a month, the Red Army pushed the enemy from Warsaw all the way to Berlin.

January 16th — January 19th

Breaking the blockade of Leningrad

The USSR made many attempts to lift the siege of Leningrad, but it was Operation Iskra (“Spark”) that finally resulted in success. A well-planned offensive on the southern coast of Lake Ladoga managed to push the Wehrmacht from its fortifications. On January 18, 1943, the blockade was finally breached, allowing the city to receive much-needed supplies on a regular basis.

January 20 — January 23

Battle of Anzio

On January 17, 1944, a large-scale operation to breach the Gustav Line in central Italy began. On January 20, the Allies landed a small force in Anzio behind enemy lines. But instead of attacking the enemy flank, they began fortifying, turning Anzio in a beachhead for future operations.

January 24 — January 27

Voronezh–Kastornoye offensive operation

On January 24, 1943, a Soviet operation to encircle and destroy the German 2nd Army began. It was a success: almost 100 000 soldiers of the Wehrmacht were killed or captured, and the Voronezh and Kursk regions were liberated.

January 28th— January 31st

Battle of Khafji

The first major battle of the Gulf War. On January 29, 1991, Iraqi forces led an attack on Saudi Arabia from occupied Kuwait, capturing the small coastal town of Ras al-Khafji. But just the next day, the town was retaken by the forces of the international coalition thanks to strong air support, with the Iraqi suffering severe losses.
