Netflix has renewed The Upshaws, the comedy series from Wanda Sykes and Regina Hicks show, Variety has reported. This comes not long after season 2, which ended in June. The third season is scheduled to return to the streaming platform early next year.

Wanda Sykes co-created The Upshaws while also writing some episodes, stars as one of the leads, and serves as an executive producer. The sitcom follows an African American family in Indiana. It shows what life is like for the family of the same name as the series. The format fits what was seen in the 1990s with Seinfeld, where standups led their own sitcoms. It stars Mike Epps (Resident Evil), Kim Fields (Living the Dream), Diamond Lyons, and Khali Spraggins.

Netflix renewed Wanda Sykes series The Upshaws for season 3

The modern landscape of comedies on TV has changed. Multi-camera shows like Seinfeld went away as shows like The Office and Modern Family established a new format for audiences. With streamers leaning into standup specials for comedians like Kevin Hart, Trevor Noah, and Lil Rel Howery. Now, we are seeing the resurgence of comedians having their shows, similarly to Louis C.K.’s now canceled Louis after his sexual misconduct came to light. The star and co-creator of the Netflix multi-camera show called this a “throwback” and how audiences are “excited” for the return of this style.

2023 and beyond is looking busy for Wanda Sykes upon releasing season 3 of The Upshaws. She will join the star-studded cast of the adult Scooby-Doo series, Velma with Mindy Kaling (The Office), Stephen Root (Barry), Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians), Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Sam Richardson (The Afterparty).

The Upshaws can be caught up on Netflix in time for the third season next year. There is no concrete date for season 3 or new cast additions.
