And, like new editions of old books, visual novels can rerelease onto new platforms, making them enjoyable for a wider audience. This is the case for one such game. Caffeine: Victoria’s Legacy is a visual novel set in a steampunk world where caffeine has magical properties. If that sounds like your cup of tea (pun very much intended), then here’s some good news: The visual novel is coming to consoles this month.
The game originally released for PC back in 2020. It was developed and published by Kikai Digital. Ratalaika Games is publishing Caffeine: Victoria’s Legacy on consoles.
What kind of visual novel is Caffeine: Victoria’s Legacy?
Now that the visual novel is about to arrive on consoles, let’s take a look at the story. The protagonist, Taka, finds himself in a parallel universe. In this world, magic exists in the form of caffeine, hence the game’s title. So, here’s a summary of those magical properties from today’s press release.
“When caffeine is consumed, it gives the drinker powers which they call ‘Caffeine’. This makes coffee beans and other caffeinated products like tea a valuable commodity, making the city which Taka ends up in one of the richest in the world. But as the story progresses, it’s also pointed out that with new technological advancements coming up, the appeal of caffeine will diminish and thus there is a danger that those who rely on caffeine powers will become irrelevant.”
The game has multiple branching paths and endings for the player to find.
“Caffeine: Victoria’s Legacy is an exciting visual novel where you have to make choices along the way to uncover the true mystery behind Taka’s history and the workings of this world. Depending on the choices you make throughout the game, you may reach the individual good and bad endings for each of the 4 romanceable characters. After completing their routes, the true ending will unlock which goes on to uncover the secrets behind the whole story. With its unique story full of plot twists and intricate world building, those who stay till the end of the journey will be rewarded handsomely. ”
Caffeine: Victoria’s Legacy is coming to PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles on September 30.
