Co-creator of Better Call Saul and creator of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan, is looking ahead to his next series. In a report from Deadline, the TV producer is preparing to pitch a “wholly original” idea to eight or nine networks or streaming platforms. Sony Pictures TV is set to continue its partnership with him.
While Better Call Saul nears its end with its finale airing on August 15, Vince Gilligan is leaving the criminal underworld filled with violence and drugs. The new project is not going to be a sci-fi show, but it is compared to The Twilight Zone and his time on The X-Files. It will be a “grounded drama” that is “set in our world,” but it will have a “tweak on it.” It is said that the project will have his style, meaning it will explore humanity with a thought-provoking lens while balancing drama with comedy.
Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan eyes his next original series
Similar to Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan will tell a singular story that will work itself out for a few seasons before concluding. He has written some of it for his pitch to give companies a sense of the story and tone.
TV has been evolving for the last twenty to thirty years to deliver higher-end stories that now rival film. A part of that evolution came Breaking Bad, where Vince Gilligan became one of the most acclaimed creators in the medium. While being a breakout hit for Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston, the series lives as one of the best shows ever made and swept award shows, having 16 Emmys in its possession.
The stride the creator had continued when he made a prequel, Better Call Saul. Although it has no Emmy wins, just over 40 nominations, it has gone on to be hailed as a worthy successor that some have said rivals its predecessor. The series explores the events before the original series with “criminal” lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) with a mix of new and old faces.
