Vigil: The Longest Night has just been released, and it’s a mix of different genres. At the first glance, it looks very much like a Soulsborne game, akin to Salt and Sanctuary and Blasphemy, but looking past the surface, it’s much more old-school than that, well, certain elements at the very least. One of those mechanics is manual saving. Upon death, you do not lose a type of currency, then respawn back at a certain place to try again to collect what you have lost. In Vigil, when you die, you die, game over. You have to reload that save, and all progress made is gone. So how do you save in Vigil: The Longest Night?

How to save?

On your travels, you will come across Owl Statues; these statues are how you save. Walk up to them and press up on the analog stick to open up a window. In this window are three options - Save, Load, and Teleport.

Now, the game will autosave every time you interact with an Owl Statue; however, autosaves are unreliable. In this menu, click on Save and then choose a slot to save it manually. Every Owl Statue you come across, you should save manually. It’s as easy as that.

If you die and then die 5 minutes later, that 5 minutes worth of progress is long gone; there is no way to retrieve it. You don’t respawn at the edge of the screen, ready to go again. It’s a Game Over; you have to load a save to continue. This is why it’s more classed as old-school, as saving is up to you, not the game.

Two items will help you in this endeavor. The first item is the Arcane Item, the Owl’s Feather, and you get this next to the first Owl Statue. This item will teleport you back to the last statue you interacted with. Meaning in dire circumstances, you can save the progress you have made items and experience-wise and teleport back to the last Owl Statue you used -  it’s incredibly handy. Oh, and what makes this item more awesome, is that it has unlimited usage.

The second item is after the second Owl Statue you come across is called Fledgling Blood Soul. This item allows the user to save the game anywhere at any given time without the use of an Owl Statue. Using this item, say just before a boss you’ve died too before, will save you the hassle of having to travel back!
