Clips shared online of the new Scooby-Doo movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, reveal that Velma is officially a lesbian. After years of attempts by filmmakers and discussions within the fan base about her sexuality, it is now canon.

One of the clips in question shows Velma meeting costume designer Coco Diablo, which confirms her being lesbian as the wind is knocked out of her when seeing this woman. The story follows Mystery Inc. as they go against doppelgänger ghosts trying to ruin Halloween.

Over the many films and series of Scooby-Doo, which originated in 1969, fans and filmmakers have had thoughts about Velma being lesbian. Most notably was James Gunn’s attempt for the live-action films that he wrote in the early 00s. He wrote it into the script, but the studio “kept watering it down.” What was shot ended up being “ambiguous,” and then what was released in theaters had nothing regarding her sexuality. In the sequel, Monsters Unleashed, she had a boyfriend.

For people who have made Scooby-Doo movies or shows, the Guardians of the Galaxy director was not the only one. Supervising producer of the series Mystery Incorporated, Tony Cervone, also had involvement in making Velma lesbian. He pointed out that her relationship with Marcie proved the long-running fan theory to be canon with that series. While he admits that he doesn’t “represent every version” of the character, he is “one of the key people that represents this one.” While some fans caught the character’s identity from the series that ran from 2010 to 2013, he told those who did not catch it should “look closer.”

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! stars Frank Welker as Fred and Scooby, Grey Griffin as Daphne, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, and Myrna Velasco as Coco Diablo. The movie was released digitally today (October 4).
