In Valheim, you’re walking a mile in the shoes of a Viking and, as such, one of the fastest ways to travel is by boat. It’s extremely vital to get on top of making a boat as it will give you passage to many of the game’s many different areas. As of this guide’s writing, there are three different types of boats: the Raft, the Karve, and the Longship. You will likely start out making the Raft and, as you go to each respective boat, the boarding capacity gets larger, the durability gets better, and it can go faster. Since it’s so vital to succeeding in Valheim, we’ve created a guide that will help you find out how to craft each of these boats.

How to Make Boats in Valheim

When considering what boat to make, you’ll always want to make the best one you have available as you will likely get the recipe as you progress naturally along in the game as the recipes for each of the boats will unlock the moment you get all of the materials needed. However, some of the materials aren’t exactly easy to come by before others so it won’t likely be that you’ll get one boat before the other. The recipes will be laid out in likely order of appearance and then how to craft them and some tips in regards to what to look for. These recipes are assuming that you’ll have all the other means of crafting the boats such as a hammer and a nearby workbench. You will need to be near some water in order to craft these, as well.

How to Craft a Raft

You’ll need these materials to craft a Raft:

  • 20 Wood
  • 6 Leather Scraps
  • 6 Resin

As this is something you’ll be able to craft before you even tackle the game’s first boss, the materials will likely be very easy to come by and won’t require a whole lot of effort. This is the most basic of the boats and its ability and capacity kind of reflect that.

How to Craft a Karve

You’ll need these materials to craft a Karve:

  • 30 Fine Wood
  • 10 Deer Hide
  • 20 Resin
  • 80 Bronze Nails

You’ll likely unlock the recipe for this boat when you craft your first set of bronze nails. By the time you can, you’ll have already beaten the first boss and gotten the pickaxe as a result, and started mining for some nearby bronze. This will also get you on the way to some fine wood as chopping birch trees down to get it requires a bronze axe.

How to Craft a Longship

You’ll need these materials to craft a Longship:

  • 100 Iron Nails
  • 10 Deer Hide
  • 40 Fine Wood
  • 40 Ancient Bark

Much like with the Karve, by the time you start being able to craft your first set of iron nails, you’ll likely unlock the recipe for the Longship. Getting the necessary iron for the nails, though, is where you’re likely to have your hang-ups. Getting iron requires you to go into the Swamp and mine it from a Crypt. Of course, it wouldn’t be that simple, because, generally, Crypts are locked and require you to seek out the game’s second boss, The Elder, and defeat it in order to get the key. While you’re out doing all that running around to get yourself some iron, keep an eye out for ancient trees so you can get yourself ancient bark from them.
