Even Vikings have to stay warm in their houses, but it is not as easy as building a small campfire indoors. Indeed, Valheim cranks up their realism in this Viking survival game by requiring players’ houses to have proper ventilation. Otherwise, their houses will be smothered in smoke. What better way to do that than with a reliable chimney?

How to Craft a Chimney

Building a chimney in Valheim is not complicated in the slightest. It can be a bit tricky, however, due to how fire and smoke works. We recommend that you start out your house with a fire. It needs to be on dirt, rather than wood, and you should have a vague idea where your bed will be placed. This way you’ll be able to get the shelter benefits and campfire benefits from sleeping near a fire.

Once you have the placement down, build back and side walls around the campfire. The walls can be wood or stone; it is just a matter of preference. It should also look like a box that is encasing the fire itself but with the front being open so you can use the fire. This will be the chimney.

Build the walls as high as you’d like, just be sure that the top is open. Now, normally, this would be the natural place to stop. From here, you can build your house and be comfortable with the warmth provided by the fire. But, what if it rains?

Because the top of the chimney is open, when it rains, the fire will go out. This can be solved rather simply. All you need to do is build your chimney a roof. This roof should not block the hole that the smoke escapes from. So, be sure to use the slanted wooden pieces that can be placed onto your house. This will provide enough cover to protect your fire and give your house a nice look from afar.
