To unlock Rat Form in V Rising, players must find and defeat a V Blood Carrier known as the Putrid Rat. Leveled at 30, this enemy is over twice the size of a normal Giant Rats and also does significantly more damage. While it is not the most complex of bosses, it can be a slight challenge for the unprepared. However, one notable characteristic about this V Blood Carrier is that the option to track its blood does not appear on the Blood Altar. Therefore, some Vampires might be bewildered as to how they can confront and defeat the Putrid Rat in V Rising.

Defeating the Putrid Rat in V Rising

Unlike most V Blood Carriers, the Putrid Rat in V Rising cannot be found in the open world but instead must be summoned. This summoning process is conducted via the Vermin Nest, a Production and Refinement Castle Structure. Once players have built this nest, they can spawn the Putrid Rat into their base using several specific resources.

V Rising: How to Find and Defeat the Winged Horror

First, to build a Vermin Nest, Vampire adventurers must sufficiently upgrade their Castle to unlock this Refinement Structure. Next, they will need to gather Stone ×360 and Bone ×120 to assemble the nest. It is recommended Vampires place the Vermin Nest in a location with adequate room for a boss battle, as the V Blood Carrier will be spawning directly into their Castle. After getting the Structure set up, the next step is to summon the Putrid Rat using the following ingredients:

  • Twilight Snapper ×1 – The Twilight Snapper can generate in lootable crates within Bandit Camps or be caught with a Fishing Pole.
  • Fish Bone ×4 – Fish Bones can commonly appear as random loot or can be directly procured by putting Fish into a Devourer.
  • Grave Dust ×8 – Grave Dust can be crafted by crushing Bones at a Grinder or looted from mob drops found within cemeteries and graveyards of Farbane Woods

After placing all the necessary items into the Vermin Nest, wait several moments for the Putrid Rat to spawn. To defeat the Putrid Rat boss in V Rising, players can use ranged attacks like Chaos Volley since the enemy has no way to retaliate from a distance. Furthermore, it will occasionally burrow into the ground and spawn a small horde of Giant Rats to attack the player. Be sure to have an AoE ability prepared for clearing this horde before the Putrid Rat returns. Once the boss is dead, players can consume its V Blood to receive Rat Form.

V Rising is available for PC via Steam.
