Lets not beat around the bush.  Uncharted 1 and 2 are fairly linear games.  Beautiful as they may be, many gamers have found the linearity of the games to be the one true flaw of the titles.  Naughty Dog has already nailed the graphics, gameplay, and story parts of the Uncharted franchise and is now planning on addressing the linearity issue in Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception.  Speaking with Eurogamer, Justin Richmond of Naughty Dog, had this to say.

“It’s still up in the air how much gameplay we’re going to let you wander around. It will probably feel more open than the other games have. For sure.” “But we’re never going to let you just ride a thousand miles off into the middle of nowhere. Ultimately the feel we want to get is, yeah, you’re lost in the desert. So it needs to feel like that. But it’s not going to feel open-world.”

Frankly, setting a treasure hunter down a liner path seems a little bit ironic.  Giving this explorer a little room to actually explore just might propel Uncharted 3 to be even better than previous games, and that is a huge undertaking.
