For the last week, Square Enix has been teasing fans with details on its new fantasy game, Antique Carnevale. Today, the company has revealed that the game is actually a free to play title destined for browsers, and it launches today on Yahoo’s Game Plus platform in Japan. Antique Carnevale puts players to take part in tactical battles based on a board game layout, and where setting a good strategy is essential to come through victorious.

The gameplay, which is heavily influenced by board games like chess, gives players the objective to defeat their opponent’s king. Each character takes over a square on the board whenever they step on it, and when the spot is already occupied by a rival, the battle mechanics get initiated. Many variables affect to the battle stats, like the value of the squares occupied by the player, and the use of powerful summons. The game also lets players to livestream and chat with other users.

Antique Carnevale is available now for browsers in Japan, although Square Enix has not revealed whether the game will launch in North America and Europe at some point. Watch the trailer below.
