According to a new report from Deadline, Paramount Pictures is changing up their release calendar. Although no statement was given as to why, the latest installment in the Transformers franchise, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is being delayed until 2023. The movie was originally slated to arrive in theaters on June 24, 2022, but it will now be released on June 9, 2023, instead.
Despite the delayed release, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is currently in production. The movie stars Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Luna Lauren Valez, Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime, and Ron Perlman as the voice of Optimus Primal. Director Steven Caple Jr. is leading the production with a script written by Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters.
During a virtual event from Paramount back in June of this year, it was revealed that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts would serve as a sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and a prequel to the other five Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay. Because of this, Rise of the Beasts will take place in 1994 — seven years after the events in Bumblebee and well before Bay’s movies. By taking place earlier in the franchise’s history, Steven Caple Jr. teased that the movie will be a sort of origin story for Optimus Prime.
The virtual event also revealed that the story in Rise of the Beasts will pull from the Beasts Wars TV series. In this series, the transformers battled each other while transforming into giant, robotic animals instead of vehicles. The heroic Maximals on the Beast Wars series transformed into a falcon, rhinoceros, and a gorilla.
