Roadside Attractions has released the new trailer for Alice, which stars Keke Palmer as a formerly enslaved person out for revenge against her past owner (Johnny Lee Miller). The Hollywood Reporter says that the film tells the story of a slave girl named Alice who is enslaved on an 1800’s plantation in Georgia. When she escapes, she makes the shocking discovery that it’s 1973. She is rescued on the roadside by a political activist named Frank, portrayed by rapper Common, who helps her learn to live her newfound free life. However, she seeks to return to the plantation to exact revenge despite Frank warning her that doing so would be a death sentence.
SlashFilm breaks down the trailer for Alice, which features Alice’s character fainting on a highway at the sight of Frank’s truck to not her knowing how to tread or write to Frank introducing her to Ebony and Jet magazine as well as popular Blaxploitation movies of that era. The trailer’s style and Palmer’s after the character’s 1970’s makeover are quite reminiscent of such films. The film is inspired by true events, namely the accounts of Black Americans who were kept as slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and it marks the directorial debut of Krystin Ver Linden.
Keke Palmer first started to gain attention in 2006 at age 13 when she starred in Akeelah and the Bee. At 28, she is now a major star. This year, along with Alice, she will appear in Jordan Peele’s Nope, which will be released in July. We will also her voice in Pixar’s Lightyear, which will be released in June.
Alice will be released in theaters on March 18.
