Top Gun: Maverick was released last week with a stellar Memorial Day Weekend opening and the biggest movie opening of Tom Cruises’ entire career. After an epic box office opening weekend last week, how is the Top Gun sequel’s stats looking for its sophomore weekend in theaters? Well, in true “Maverick” fashion, the film’s momentum is not slowing down yet, thankfully, nowhere near the less fun “danger zone” of the box office. Paramount Pictures expects Top Gun 2 to surpass its domestic gross and earn $290 million through this Sunday.
After eight days since being the widest domestic opening and being shown at 4,751 theaters, Top Gun: Maverick is averaging an estimated $5,262 in domestic ticket sales as of yesterday, according to Box Office Mojo. Top Gun 2 has added 19 theaters to show the film in addition to the 4,732 North American cinemas from last week, and the Tom Cruise film is staying at its place ranked number one at the box office and earned a whopping $25 million on Friday.
Top Gun: Maverick Beats an MDW Record
On its early Thursday opening, Joseph Kosinski’s long-awaited summer blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick earned 19.3 million at the box office. After many delays, the Top Gun sequel finally hit theaters for Memorial Day Weekend and beat out Disney’s 15-year-old box office record for the highest-grossing Memorial Day Opening at the box office. Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, released on May 25th, 2007, earned $139.8M. Top Gun Maverick was projected to reach $142.4M over the four-day holiday weekend, but the Tom Cruise film ended up grossing $156 million domestically,$126 million coming from foreign audiences, and a fantastic total of $282 million at the global box office.
