Tomb Raider reboot sequel has been given a release date and director. Fans won’t have to wait long as the new movie is set to come out on March 19th, 2021.

Alicia Vikander starred in the 2018 reboot simply called Tomb Rader. It wasn’t a monster hit but did well enough to warrant a sequel. All said and done, Tomb Raider made a respectable $275 million worldwide. The new movie was loosely based on the 2013 reboot of the series. The creators put a darker edgier Lara on screen this time around.

MGM, the studio behind the movie, hired Amy Jump to write a sequel script earlier this year. The studio is keeping the production in the same family and hired Ben Wheatley to direct. Wheatly, aside from being Amy Jumps collaborator, is also her husband.

The two filmmakers are known in cult circles for such films as Kill List and High-Rise. The duo most recently collaborated on Free Fire about an arms deal that’s gone wrong. Jump and Wheatly have been known to make exceptional movies if given free rein and creative freedom. News of their involvement in the new Tomb Raider definitely shows hope for the sequel.

Tomb Raider has had its fair share of ups and downs. Both in movie and video game form, the franchise keeps reinventing itself. The first two movies starring Angelina Jolie were less than stellar. Jolie herself was arguably a great casting choice, but the scripts were atrocious. The games as well lost their luster over the years. It wasn’t until the 2013 reboot that developers started to get things back on track.

The reboot movie focused less on objectifying Lara and centered more on the action and her capabilities. Tomb Raider fans deserve a great movie centered around their favorite heroin. Jump and Wheatly have the chops to make it happen. Vikander did a great job in the role, but she needs a well-crafted script to really shine.

Production on the as of yet titled Tomb Raider sequel begins at the beginning of 2020. More news to come on the production in the months ahead.
