The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Power Rangers #1
This past month a new comic series was announced and dropped that had all our inner 11-year-olds squeal in delight. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Power Rangers crossover has been something that has explored in the TV shows in the past, but never the original Mighty Morphin iteration, arguable the most popular and beloved. It was argued about in schoolyards, who would win? The TNMT or Power Rangers? Donatello vs. Billy, Leonardo vs. Jason, Raphael vs. Tommy? Now IDW and BOOM! Studios have given us what we’ve all wanted with the announcement of the TNMT/Power Rangers crossover. With the first issue of the 5 part series dropping later this week, it seems like at least some of those questions will be answered.
While both Power Rangers and the TMNT have their own pretty successful comic series in progress, With The Rangers have two with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series along with the prequel Go Go Power Rangers, it’s been said that this series won’t really have any lasting effects on the main series and acts mostly as a stand-alone. But how would the writers get two heroic icons to fight each other and become even momentarily at each other’s throats? It’s simple, Tommy Oliver goes missing, and Shredder recruits the ultimate Foot Soldier.
Tommy Oliver, now under the name Tommy Marshell, has gone AWOL from the Rangers and hasn’t morphed, making it impossible for the other rangers to track him. The Foot Clan has been a constant disappointment to their leader, Shredder, always getting their butts kicked by the TMNT at every turn. So it came as a huge surprise when a mysterious new addition to the clan lays not only hold his own but manages to lay out Raphael. Tommy finally morphs into the Green Ranger, and the others can track him in New York. They are giving their friend the benefit of the doubt and immediately team against the turtles with the Foot Clan, now running like a well-oiled machine thanks to Tommy’s leadership and much to the delight of The Shredder.
