Timothée Chalamet shared the first picture of himself as Willy Wonka in the upcoming film, Wonka. Chalamet shared a picture of himself in full Wonka attire on his Instagram saying, “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last…” The post features two pictures, one of which features Chalamet in a maroon coat, a top hat, and a scarf. The second picture is of a cane with a gift wrap pleasant at the top.

Wonka is set before the events of Roald Dahl’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Information from director David Heyman seems to suggest that the film will showcase the growing disillusionment in Willy Wonka that set the events of the original story.

Timothée Chalamet was cast to play Willy Wonka in May 2021, beating out other actors such as Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller. People Magazine says that the young actor will sing and dance in the film, allowing fans to see a more whimsical side of Chalamet.

Chalamet is keeping himself busy, as he is coming fresh off his work in Dune, which is coming out on October 22. He has received acclaim for his work in films such as Beautiful Boy and Call Me By Your Name. He is the third actor to take on the role of Willy Wonka, having been preceded by Gene Wilder in 1971 and Johnny Depp in 2005.

This is not Chalamet’s first attempt at less serious roles or comedic roles. He hosted Saturday Night Live last year and showed he had a more goofy and fun side to him than fans are used to seeing. This is looking to be his most theatrical performance to date.
