First released in 2005, the original Mr. and Mrs. Smith centers around John Smith (Brad Pitt), a construction executive, and his wife Jane (Angelina Jolie), who works in tech support. The pair find themselves bored and stuck in what would be a mundane, upper-class marriage if not for the fact that they were both spies, working for rival agencies and hiding the truth of their professions from each other. When John and Jane are told to kill each other following a failed operation, they engage in an increasingly dangerous dance around each other, combining their intimate knowledge of each other and their home with the deadly edge of a secret agent on a mission.
However, the couple is ultimately unable to take each other out and decide to work together and kidnap the target of their original failed operation. The Smiths find out that they were turned against each other by their own organizations and, instead of turning against each other, decide to fight for each other and their marriage.
