Empire magazine has released a new image of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) from the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder. The image features the best look at the two characters in their shiny and extravagant new costumes. The article attached to the image teases Jane’s return as being a “real mindf**k for Thor,” as he hasn’t seen his former flame in about eight years. To make matters more complicated, she’s not the astrophysicist he once knew but is now the Mighty Thor, strong enough to wield his hammer. Interestingly, this image was released just a few days after we got our first look at the upcoming comic series Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor.

The concept of Jane wielding Thor’s hammer was first explored in Jason Aaron’s The Mighty Thor comic series in 2015. It was announced in 2019 that Natalie Portman would return to the MCU with Jane Foster taking on the Mighty Thor persona. We got our first look when the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder was released last month.

Jane Foster is Much Funnier as the Mighty Thor

According to the Empire piece, director Taika Waititi didn’t know he would be working with that storyline until he and the team started writing out the story. While he loved the idea of bringing Jane Foster back, he didn’t want it to be familiar. “You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment,” Waititi said. “You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.” He went on to explain that Portman is a much funnier and goofier person than the first two films allowed her to be and that this challenge for more humor was one she was up for.

Thor: Love & Thunder is scheduled for release on July 8.
